Mount Kenya

Mt Kenya climbing is possible through three popular routes:

  • In Naro Moru, Out Naro Moru (Two days)
  • In Naro Moru, Out Naro Moru (Three days)

Two Day, One Night ~ Destination – Mt. Kenya Moorland, 4023 m (13,200 ft)

Day 1: Total 5-6 hours hiking
0700 hrs – Breakfast.
0730 hrs – Depart Sandavy Guest House. Drive to Karatina town, 145 km (90 mi) northwest of Nairobi.
1000 hrs – Refreshments and rest stop at Scandia Guest House, Karatina.
1030 hrs – Depart Karatina town for Naro Moru town along the south western circuit of the Mt Kenya forest edge.
1215 hrs – Naro Moru town. Refresh supplies and sample the mountain air.
1300 hrs – Packed lunch at the park gate and acquire entry permits.
1400 hrs – Drive into the park via 4WD. Drop off at the Percival Bridge.

  • Hike on a trail to Met Station, 3048m (10, 000ft).
  • 1530 hrs – Arrival, refreshments, settling in tents.
  • Briefings, natural history, team-games, social afternoon.
  • Dinner preparations and nature walks.

1900 hrs – Dinner, evening activities and briefing on the next section.
2100 hrs – Lights out.

Day 2: Total 5-6 hiking hours
0630 hrs – Wakeup call.  Prepare for the hike and pack-packing
0700 hrs – Breakfast
0730 hrs – Start of Section 1 caves.
1000 hrs – Refreshment break.
1015 hrs – Start of Section 2 hiking
1200 hrs – Arrive at final destination: Picnic Rocks, 4023m (13,200 ft).

  • Packed lunch
  • View and photograph the spectacular Mt Kenya peaks, avifauna, moorland, Teleki Valley and alpine endemic vegetation.

1300hrs – Begin return trek back to Met Station.
1430hrs – Arrive Met Station. Board 4WD to park gate. After clearance, drive to Nairobi.
1630 hrs – Roadside tea and snacks en route at Karatina town.
1830 hrs – Estimated time of arrival Nairobi.

Three Days, Two Nights ~ Destination – Mackinder’s and American camps, 4200m (13,780ft)

Day 1: Total 3-4 hiking hours.
0700 hrs – Breakfast
0730 hrs – Depart Sandavy Guest House. Drive to Karatina town, 145km (90mi) northwest of Nairobi.
1000 hrs – Refreshments and rest stop at Scandia Guest House, Karatina.
1030 hrs – Depart Karatina town, heading to Naro Moru town along the south western circuit of the Mt Kenya forest edge.  Enjoy a short visit to Thego Fish Camp.
1215 hrs – Naro Moru town. Refresh supplies and sample a breath of the mountain air.
1300 hrs – Packed lunch at the park gate and acquire entry permits.
1400 hrs – Drive into the park on a 4WD to a destination below Percival Bridge for drop off.

  • Hike on a trail to Met Station, 3048m (10, 000ft).
  • Occasional animal sightings

1530 hrs – Arrival, refreshments, settling in tents.

  • Briefings, natural history, team-games, social afternoon.
  • Dinner preparations and nature walks.

1900 hrs – Dinner, evening activities and briefing for next section.
2100 hrs – Lights out.

Day 2: Total 5-6 hiking hours
0630 hrs – Wakeup call.  Prepare for the hike and pack-packing,
0700 hrs – Breakfast
0730 hrs – Start of Section 1 hike with a break at the caves.
1000 hrs – Refreshment break.
1015 hrs – Start of Section 2 hiking.
1200 hrs – Arrive Picnic Rocks, 4023m, (13,200 ft).

  • Packed lunch
  • View and photograph the spectacular Mt Kenya peaks, avifauna, moorland, Teleki valley and alpine endemic vegetation.

1300hrs – Start of Section 3.  Leisurely trek towards Mackinder’s camp with breaks en route.
1530hrs – Arrive Mackinder’s Camp, 4,200m, (13,780ft).

  • Accommodation in lodge, settling in.
  • Refreshments; warm cup of cocoa and snacks.
  • Walk and explore camp area.  Rest.
  • Dinner preparations.

1830 hrs – Dinner. Talks on mountain history, alpine climate and stories from the mountain.
2100 hrs – Lights out.

Day 3: Total 6-7 hiking hours
0700 hrs – Wakeup call and packing.
0730 hrs – Breakfast
0800 hrs – Briefings and preparation for exploration hike.

  • Option 1 – American Camp and Tydal Glacier.
  • Option 2 – Gichirimani Caves and Lake Hohnel.

1000 hrs – Refreshments.
1030 hrs – Begin trek back to Met Station.
1430 hrs – Arrive Met Station. Board 4WD to Naro Moru park gate.
1500 hrs – Park gate clearance.
1630 hrs – Karatina. Hot mug of chai at Scandia Guest House
1700 hrs – Depart Karatina. Head to Nairobi.
1900 hrs – Estimated time of arrival in Nairobi.

Four Days Direct Safari to Mt Kenya ~ In Sirimon, Out Naro Moru Route

Day 1: Depart Nairobi, 1661m (5450ft) at 0900 for Nanyuki arriving early afternoon.  Lunch, dinner and overnight in Nanyuki for acclimatization.
Day 2: After breakfast transfer by vehicle to Sirimon gate, 2600m (8530 ft). Hike to Old Moses Camp for overnight at 3300m (10,826ft). The hike takes 6 to 8 hours.
Day 3: Hike to Shipton’s Camp, 4200m (13,780ft), for overnight. The hike takes 7 to 8 hours.
Day 4: Trek to Point Lenana, 4985m (16,355ft) at 0300 hours and descend directly to Met Station for pick up and transfer back to Nairobi.

Mount Kenya ~ In Sirimon, Out Chogoria – Five Days/Four Nights

Day 1: Depart Nairobi, 1661m (5450ft) at 0900 for Nanyuki arriving early afternoon. Lunch, dinner and overnight in Nanyuki  for acclimatization.
Day 2: Old Moses Camp
After breakfast drive to Sirimon Park Gate, 2600m (8530 ft). After check-in start hiking through the rain forest for 9km to Old Moses Camp, 3300m (10,826ft). Dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Shipton Camp
Depart Old Moses Camp at 0730hrs via Mackinder’s Valley to Shipton Camp, 4200m (13,780ft). Dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Point Lenana to Bandas.
Early morning departure at 0300 to the summit. The trek takes three hours to Point Lenana, 4985m (16,355ft) arriving at 0630. After sunrise descend to Mintos Hut for full breakfast. Later proceed down across  Gorges Valley to Chogoria Bandas and campsite. Dinner and overnight.
Day 5: After breakfast hike to the Chorgoria Gate, 6-7 km (approximately 1-1.5 hrs) with vehicle transfer back to Nairobi.

Mount Kenya ~ In Sirimon, Out Naro Moru –  Five Days/Four  Nights

Day 1: Depart Nairobi, 1661m (5450ft) at 0900 for Nanyuki arriving early afternoon. Lunch, dinner and overnight in Nanyuki in order to acclimatize.
Day 2: After breakfast vehicle transfer to Sirimon Gate and hike to Old Moses Camp, 3300m (10,826ft) for overnight.  6 to 8 hours hike.
Day 3: Hike to Shipton’s Camp 4200m (13,780ft) for overnight.  7 to 8 hours hike.
Day 4: Trek to Point Lenana at 0300 hours with leisurely descent to Met Station for dinner and overnight.
Day 5: Descend the mountain to Naro Moru park gate with vehicle transfer back to Nairobi.

NB: FOR ALL OF THE ABOVE OPTIONS IT IS POSSIBLE TO TRAVEL FROM NAIROBI AND HIKE TO OLD MOSES CAMP BUT SPEND THE NEXT DAY THERE FOR ACCLIMATIZATION INSTEAD OF AN OVERNIGHT IN NANYUKI ON DAY ONE.

Seven Day Mt Kenya Exploration ~ In Sirimon, Out Naromoru Route

Day 1: Choice of sleeping over in Karatina at Scandia Guest House for acclimatization and a visit in this beautiful market town. Choose an accompanied town visit if desired. Overnight can also be in Nanyuki town.
Day 2:
0730 hrs: Depart Karatina/Nanyuki. Drive northwest. Enjoy a brief stop at equator crossing if coming from Karatina, 2950m  (9678ft). Drive further northeast for a drop off at Sirimon Park Gate, 2743m  (9000ft).
1300 hrs: Packed lunch.
1300 hrs: Briefing then begin hike northeast to Old Moses Camp.
Water/snack breaks on trail.
Nature Nuggets along the trail.
1700 hrs: Arrival, Old Moses Camp, 3353m  (11000ft).
Hot tea with briefings about  mountain history, zonation, flora and fauna adaptations.
1830 hrs: Dinner
Familiarization of route/maps.
Social evening.
2100 hrs: Lights out.
Day 3:
0600 hrs: Wake-up call. Prepare for day.
0630 hrs: Breakfast.
0700 hrs: Packing, break camp.
0730 hrs: Depart Old Moses. Head ENE to Shipton Camp, 4267m, (14000ft).
Water & snacks breaks en route.
1230 hrs: Light lunch and refreshments at Picnic Rocks.
1530 hrs: Arrival Shipton Camp, 4267m, (14000ft).
Soup or warm cocoa & snacks.
Relaxation or hiking around camp area, taking  photographs  with new companions (rock-hyraxes) as you enjoy the evening sun.
1830 hrs: Dinner, warm drinks.
Pack for Day 4 & early morning Lenana Ascent.
2030 hrs: Lights out.
Day 4:
0200 hrs: Wake-up call.
Hot coffee, cookies and pack water.
0230 hrs: Set off for Lenana Summit.
0545 hrs: Enjoy sunrise and the spectacular view from the third highest African peak, Mt
Kenya, 4985m, (16,355ft).
Photo session.
0630 hrs: Descend back to Shipton Camp.
0730 hrs: Breakfast, rest, pack water.
0800 hrs: Depart to Mackinder’s Camp.
Head south, then southeast along the magnificent western circuit.
View numerous tarns, glaciers, peaks and passes; Hausberg, Oblong, Emerald and
Nanyuki glacial lakes, Author’s Seat, Eastern Terminal, Two Tarn Col. Early camping at
Two Tarn Hut. Enjoy up-close views of Batian, Nelion and Pigot peaks. Warm drinks,
photographs! Soak up the late afternoon sun by the shores of Hut Tarn, 4420m, (14500ft).
Team adventure activities.
Early dinner and sleep.
Day 5:
0700 hrs: Wake-up call.
0730 hrs: Breakfast.
0830 hrs: Break camp. Hike toward Mackinder’s Camp. Explore Gichirimani Caves and
rocks on Teleki Valley along Naro Moru route.
1230 hrs: Camp at Lake Hohnel, 4267m, (14000ft).
Lunch and lakeside camp activities and games.
Opportunity to explore area, take photographs, journal, rest.
1730: hrs Early dinner, debrief & farewell.
Early to bed, early to rise.
Day 6:
0600 hrs: Wake-up call. Pack.
0.30 hrs: Breakfast.
0730 hrs: Break camp. Final briefing.
0800 hrs: Hike westwards toward Met Station.
Early lunch break.
1300 hrs: Pick up at Met Station, 3048m, (10,000ft).
1430 hrs: Exit park.
1600 hrs: Scandia Guest House drop off.
Stretching, shower, market visit, dinner. overnight
Day 7: Depart for Nairobi..

Seven Day Multi-Activity Mountain Expedition
Activities and Highlights

  • View 3 of the most beautiful glacial lakes on Mt Kenya, situated 14,000ft plus.
  • Explore the fishing potential of the lakes; Hornell, Michelson and Ellis.
  • Cycle 40 – 50 km up to 10,000ft with 4WD and porter assistance.
  • Alternate between camping and lodging facilities to allow flexibility and access to otherwise non-frequented and pristine zones of Mt Kenya.
  • Optional summit of Point Lenana, the third highest peak on the mountain.

Personal gear and service:

TRAVEL  ITINERARY

DAY 1

  • Drive from Sandavy Guest House to Sagana, 1372m (4,500ft).
  • Water, refreshments, bathroom break, route check.  Ready to cycle.
  • Cycle 12 km to Africana Curio Shop, 1555m (5100ft). Thirty minute rest and water break.
  • Ride up hill, 7 km to Scandia Guest House, 1646m (5,400 ft). Rest, refreshments, briefing, cycle service.
  • Optional hike to sports field, market or tea farm for further acclimatization.
  • Dinner and lodging at Scandia Guest House.

DAY 2

  • Breakfast and biking preparation.
  • Vehicle drop off at State Lodge on the edge of Mt Kenya forest.
  • Refreshments, water break and start of 16 km biking to Naro Moru/Munyu Junction.
  • Vehicle pick-up and drive to Kiambuthia forest edge. Start of 6km final leg to park gate. Lunch and acquire tickets.
  • 4WD shuttle to Percival Bridge. Drop off. Start of 5km hike to Met Station, 3048m (10,000ft).
  • Evening team activities, talks and games.
  • Dinner and overnight.

DAY 3.

  • Breakfast, briefing and hiking preparations.
  • Hike through a transition of bamboo, heather and Hygenia forest.
  • Explore moorland vegetation, caves and rocks.
  • Arrive at Lake Hornell, 4206m (13,800ft) after 6 hour hike. Refreshments and camping activities.
  • Talk on alpine zonation, geology etc.
  • Dinner and other activities

DAY 4

  • Breakfast, briefing and hike preparations.
  •  Hiking and photography around camp and Lake Hohnel.
  • Hike to Mackinder’s Camp, 4328m (14,200ft). Lunch and more acclimatizing.
  •  Easy afternoon hike to Tydall Glacier, Tydall Tarn and Hut Tarn.
  • Rest, dinner and overnight at Mackinder’s Camp.

DAY 5

  • Summit Peak Lenana early morning, (optional).
  • Hike to Austrian Hut for a closer view of Lewis Glacier, Darwin Glacier, and all the main peaks.
  • Explore Kolbe snow field, Harris Tarn and Samba Tarn.
  • Camping by Lake Michelson or Mintos Hut.

DAY 6

  • Late breakfast and scenery walk.
  • Hike down Chogoria trail with scenery stops en route, refreshments and nature talks.
  • Light lunch at Lunch Point.
  • Early arrival at Road Head Camp. Rest and nature walks.
  • Camp-fire, wrap-up.
  • Dinner and camping.

DAY 7

  • Extended breakfast
  • Two hour hike to park gate. Check out.
  • 4 WD pick up from gate to Chogoria road-head. Light lunch.
  • Van pick up and start of four hour drive back to Nairobi.
  • BRAVO…..end of a memorable expedition!
